I'm all for tables, but this one looks horribly messy compared to the simple list we had before. The portraits are already on the heroes' pages now - I think I prefer the previous list unless we can tidy this up. 23:31, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
* Any better? I think it is nice to have all the pics on one page if possible (as well as on the hero pages) --Legate (talk) 13:11, 14 March 2024 (UTC)
** So much better! It's clean and concise, well done! 13:35, 14 March 2024 (UTC)
* Other ideas:
** Add "|frame" to the picture descriptions to always show the caption.
** Change images to something like this: <pre><gallery heights=64px mode=packed-hover>Image:Hero Lord Haart (Heroes II).png|Knight</gallery></pre>
<gallery heights=64px mode=packed-hover>Image:Hero Lord Haart (Heroes II).png|Knight</gallery>

Portraits
* The 58x64 are bad quality, personally I would change them to 101x93 what do you guys think?
** They are not bad quality as they are taken directly from the game's files and downscaled without aliasing to preserve their original style; in their original size they would not nicely fit in with the rest of the pages and templates without becoming blurred when resized and losing the homogeneous design of the template/page 12:48, 21 March 2024 (UTC)

Maximus
I'm not sure if Maximus should be in the table as it seems that like with Kastore there is two (one from Enroth and one from Terra) of them: https://mightandmagic.fandom.com/wiki/Maximus_(Enroth)
: <s>This Maximus is the same one - his design is the same despite the difference in art styles.</s> Similarly, Balfour is a reference to Heroes IV where you play as Tawni Balfour, who is this Balfour's (adopted) daughter (Tevye, a HOTA crew member, confirmed this). 23:52, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
: Tevye has since confirmed: "To clear things up, we are aware that Maximus of Enroth from H1 and H2 and Maximus of Terra from MM7 are not the same person; Maximus from All In is the latter, but he is similar enough to the former in appearance, so we decided to incorporate some features from both in our portrait, for better in-HoMM coherence." – so the person is not the same, you are correct, and they merged the styles of both into Maximus (Terra)'s new appearance!
Other Games
Now that the page is called Heroes from other games it seems we should include the heroes who appear in Heroes 4 (and in M&M I-IX if there are any). This However will make the list very long. These are all the heroes we would have to include, assuming I didn't miss any:

homm4
*Haven:
**Sorsha, Tyris, Christian, Orrin, Mullich, Adelaide, Caitlin, Mirlanda, Sanya, Rion, Ingham
*Asylum:
**Gretchin, Lorelei, Octavia, Ajit, Dace, Gruezak, Sephinroth, Darkstorm, Jeddite, Xyron
*Academy:
**Iona, Neela, Rissa, Fafner, Piquedram, Ufretin, Aine, Brissa, Cyra, Daremyth, Aenain, Astral, Grindan, Solymr, Theodorus, Malcom
*Stronghold:
**Shiva, Crag Hack, Bron, Krellion, Tazar, Yog

mm8
* Catherine?, Roland?

Discussion
* Interesting - I didn't know there were so many reused in H4 (i.e. heroes that survived the Reckoning). For the M&M games, it should only be mm6-8 as those are the only ones on Enroth, but no guarantees. Based on the lore I have seen, I believe Catherine/Roland should appear in mm8. --Legate (talk)

There's also the matter of Heroes II for Game Boy Color, which despite the name is not a port of the main Heroes II game. It re-uses a lot of Heroes III graphics (heavily compressed) including dozens of heroes with their according portraits. But then, I don't know if that game has anything resembling canonicity, let alone whether it's relevant for this page as it's currently used. - Hurry Up and Wait, the final scenario of the Foolhardy Waywardness campaign.withab

Forge was a town type planned for ab. It was a predominantly technologically oriented town, stylistically being a mix of Star Trek-esque high technology already known from the Might & Magic universe, as well as dieselpunk, cyberpunk and art deco. Its unit lineup included Goblins, Zombies, humans and other creatures "borrowed" from other factions, armed with, among other things: chainsaws, guns, jetpacks, and rocket launchers. However, the town was scrapped in the end and replaced with Conflux town (which was supposed to appear later, in an untitled expansion, according to an interview with Gregory Fulton) – due to fan backlash, which involved threats of boycotting the game and even letters with death threats towards the developers. The issue was exacerbated by a few bloggers who encouraged the fans to hate the faction even more. In the end, the faction was scrapped and Conflux's release moved to ab expansion, as 3DO was in financial dire straits and couldn't afford to take the risk of even a projected 5% of potential buyers boycotting the game. The expansion's storyline was reworked to accomodate the change.

Lore
The Heavenly Forges themselves were machines much akin to universal constructors (or glorified 3D printers), capable of producing extremely intricate, durable and effective equipment based on pre-loaded blueprints, seemingly out of thin air - as well as scanning the molecular structure of any existing equipment and duplicating it flawlessly and in what appeared to be unlimited numbers. Even low-tech, traditional weaponry such as daggers or spears turned out by the Forges was of such quality, that it looked as new as the day it was made even over a thousand years later. The Forges were created by the Ancients, a futuristic race that exists in the HoMM and MM universe known for having established a glorious civilization of high magic and technology and for conducting planetary-scale experiments on seeding worlds with life. Several such Forges were also present on Enroth, however after the intergalactic web (Web of Worlds) that connected the Ancients' worlds with the Spinward Rim (the quadrant of the galaxy where Enroth and Axeoth, among others, are located) was heavily damaged by the alien race of Kreegans, the Ancients lost connection with the entirety of the Spinward Rim - an event known as The Silence. Without contact with the Ancients, no proper maintenance could be offered to the Heavenly Forges and one by one they eventually either failed and became inoperable on their own, or got destroyed in raids and stripped down for raw materials. The last Heavenly Forge ceased functioning in year 113 A.S. (after the Silence), and without the know-how from the Ancients, they couldn't be rebuilt and the entirety of the high technology they afforded was eventually lost, bringing a definitive end to what was later termed the Age of Wonders and kickstarting Enroth's long descent into barbarism.

Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor
The party of Might and Magic III's eight "Ultimate Adventurers" from Terra, strayed off course when pursuing Corak and Sheltem and crash landed on planet Enroth, in the sea east of the town of Spaward in Avlee. They donned their high-tech wetsuits and made their way out of their spaceship, The Lincoln, to the surface - where they were noticed by a Deyjan Goblin raiding party and an elven border partrol from Avlee, who had been engaged in a skirmish. The "sea people" were seen to engage in an argument, and promptly split into two factions, a "good" and an "evil" one. The good adventurers, led by Resurectra and joined by Crag Hack, Sir Caneghem and Robert the Wise, made their way to Bracada and became advisors to king Gavin Magnus. The evil adventurers, comprised of Kastore, Maximus, Dark Shade and Tolberti, instead travelled to Deyja and installed themselves as advisors to as-of-then king of the land, Archibald Ironfist. Uninterested with progress in studying the art of necromancy and more leaning towards ambitions of world conquest, Kastore and his fellows betrayed Archibald, formed a splinter faction in Deyja, and eventually managed to oust him and usurp his throne (with Kastore serving as the figurehead), casting Archibald out to a small island off the eastern shores of Avlee. During the events of Might and Magic 7's Dark path (the one originally intended as canonical), they soon turned their attention to recreating one of the Heavenly Forges with the intention of duplicating the Ancient weaponry (laser blasters and rifles) they had brought with them in their spaceship. The goal was to raise a technologically superior army and conquer the planet for their own benefit. They were able to find all necessary materials and parts on Antagarich, with the exception of one, known as the "Oscillation Overthruster", which they tasked the protagonist party with retrieving after the latter returned from assassinating the Kreegan leader Xenofex and rescuing Roland Ironfist from the Kreegan lair in Eeofol. The party later donned the Terrans' high-tech wetsuits and took a dive in the shoals just east of the town of Spaward in Avlee, where the Lincoln lay hidden beneath the sea; entered it, defeated the security droids, retrieved the Overthruster and thus the Heavenly Forge was successfully completed. Not long afterwards, rumors of an army of goblins armed with ancient weaponry being amassed in Deyja swept the land.

Heroes of Might and Magic III: Armageddon's Blade (Original)
In the original script for the Armageddon's Blade campaign, Gelu, Catherine and Roland, cornered by the superior military might of the Forge faction and on the brink of defeat, were supposed to obtain the Armageddon's Blade from of one the Ancients' vaults, and then use it to destroy the Heavenly Forge itself, which in turn would also immediately destroy all Forge towns and remove any evidence of the technology from the face of the planet once again. The threat of the Kreegans was initially supposed to have been neutralized with the assassination of Xenofex, thus making room for the new Deyjan army to be a world-threatening force and the antagonist of the campaign.

Town details
Forge's alignment was evil. Its might hero class was the Cyborg and its magic hero class was the Technician.

Creatures
Forge creatures were planned to be stronger compared to other towns, but more expensive and perhaps lower in population.

*Level 1: Grunt and Foot Soldier. Goblins armed with futuristic guns; ranged attackers.

Buildings
Besides buildings common to all towns, the Forge was intended to have a unique building based on an oil pump. Its Grail building was the Tesla Coil.

Other information
*The only screenshot of a Forge town used the name Dolere; this is a Stronghold town name and was presumably a placeholder.
*The Obelisk puzzle illustration for Forge also included the four neutral dragons added in Armageddon's Blade: the Rust Dragon, Crystal Dragon, Faerie Dragon, and Azure Dragon. It's unclear whether these dragons were to have any particular connection to Forge, or were simply included in the illustration because they were set to debut in the same expansion.

<br clear=all>

Leftovers and re-uses
Some subtle elements of the Forge remain in the final version of Armageddon's Blade. For example, the box art image of ab features the Forge's blacksmith building in the background behind Adrienne and Catherine. A menu image of Gelu depicts him with a dead Stinger. Another menu image of Mutare Drake shows her targeted with a laser.
<gallery mode="packed" heights="240px">
File:Homm ab.jpg|Blacksmith.
File:Armageddon's blade menu no buttons.png|Gelu and dead Stinger.
File:Complete Mutare.png|Mutare with a laser designator.
</gallery>

Another remaining element can be found in the Farming Towns Day 20 event text: "We have been attacked by hideous beasts wielding powerful weaponry." That mention of powerful weaponry makes sense in the context of the originally planned campaign against the Forge faction, but less so in the finally released campaign which is a second war between Erathia and the Kreegan of Eeofol.

The concept art of the Stinger was used as the basis for Boragus's portrait.

Phoenixes, originally planned as neutral creatures, were moved to Conflux.

wh- hota used many aspects of the cancelled Forge as inspiration for the Factory town and its associated story, but substantially reworked with a steampunk aesthetic rather than cyberpunk. In the story of the Forged in Fire campaign, Kastore achieves some technological progress with the help of Frederick but ultimately fails to activate the Heavenly Forges.
The Lobstrosity was a cancelled creature planned for Restoration of Erathia. It resembles a mutated lobster. It received both concept art and a 3D model render, but no screenshots are known that depict it actually appearing in-game. Its model was rendered by Kenneth Thomson Jr., based on concept art by George Almond. According to Gregory Fulton, Almond's concept art that became the Lobstrosity was a first pass at designing the Behemoth; he rejected the design and requested a redesign similar to the Rancor from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Fulton also claimed that the Lobstrosity design was going to be used as a 'secret' troop but that he was not aware that it had ever been modeled.

Its name, a portmanteau of "lobster" and "monstrosity", is seemingly an homage to Stephen King's The Dark Tower series.
It was intended as a Fortress unit, and was seemingly replaced by either the Serpent Fly or Gorgon, as all the other Fortress units appear alongside it in the prerelease screenshot.
:"As you call it, the Demilich was supposed to be a Will-o-the-Wisp, for the Fortress. It was inspired by the Lost Soul monster from Doom, and was cut because we couldn’t get it to 'glow' properly."
|-
| Scholar as seen on the adventure map.
|}

Scholar is an adventure map object, that teaches a hero +1 to one of the primary skills, or one level of secondary skill, or a spell. The map-maker can define which primary skill, which secondary skill or which spell the scholar teaches, or it can be random.

If the Scholar teaches a secondary skill that a hero already has, it will teach it to the next level (e.g. from basic to advanced). If the hero has the secondary skill already at expert level, the teaching will be random. The same happens if the Scholar teaches a spell and the hero has already learned it, doesn't have spell book or sufficient level of Wisdom to learn it. Thus, the Scholar always teaches the hero something and disappears after that.

A Scholar can also teach a secondary skill that a hero cannot learn due to his class. For example, a Scholar can teach Water Magic to Barbarians.

hota
In hota, heroes can refuse to learn a secondary skill from a Scholar. Rejecting a skill still causes the Scholar to disappear. Primary skills and spells cannot be rejected.

end of user commentary

Trivia
*A prerelease screenshot identifies the Scholar as specifically being Xanthor. In the final game, the text for the event was re-worded and the Scholar is never identified by name.
# Maps (Lead: Legate)
#* Questions:
#*# Does Land of the Giants belong to AvLee, Eeofol or Nighon?
#*#* Nighon: The Antagarich physical map colors it like Nighon.
#*#** This agrees with Antagarich#Geography that Turnam just added. This states: "The Dungeon Overlords rule the eastern shores of the Erathian continent, as well as the Nighon islands off the coast."
#*#* Eeofol: World on Fire intro makes it seem like part of the halfling homeland.
#*#** Aren't "Eeofol" and "Land of the Giants" synonyms anyway? In MM7, the "tunnels to Eeofol" lead you to the Land of the Giants region. --Turnam (talk) 08:43, 30 June 2024 (UTC)
#*#* AvLee: What we currently have on the maps.
#*#* RESOLUTION: Land of the Giants was part of the halfling homeland of Eeofol before the Night of Shooting Stars. It seems as though when the Kreegans conquered Eeofol, Nighon opportunistically grabbed it to create a foothold on the main continent. Since our maps are based ~1167 AS, lets change it to Nighon and add some explanation about this. --Legate (talk) 13:24, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
#*# I think the Contested Lands section is not entirely accurate. I think some of the regions listed may actually be part of Erathia.
#*#* Forestdale (region) should be part of Erathia (See Talk:Contested Lands). Pages/maps need to be updated.
#*#* Possibly move regions to Contested Lands. Consider: Marble Garden, Forestdon, Forestbury, Forestlow, Strongwillow, Woodgrove.
#*#** If we move these areas, they should be double-listed in Erathia and Contested Lands as both are true over the course of the game.
# Ok, here with another pie-in-the sky/probably a ton of work idea. For campaign scenarios, the coordinates located on the pages are generally helpful only if you have the scenario editor open (and have the campaign broken into scenarios). I think it would be possible to make a map that has things like the seer's huts labelled with numerical overlays. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Overlay - Brisbane example). We may even be able to do this somewhat programmatically - make a template that takes in the map file and coordinates for what we want to label. Since the size of the map is known (e.g. Medium is 72x72), then a hut at (50, 15, 0) would be 50/72 of the way across the image in the x-direction and 15/72 of the way down in the y-direction, in the upper-world. --Legate (talk) 02:46, 17 March 2024 (UTC)
Gunslingers and Bounty Hunters are the level 6 creatures of Factory. They are recruited from the Watchtower.

*Tancred has Gunslingers as a specialty, which increases the attack and defense skills of any Gunslingers or Bounty Hunters for each level attained after 6th level, and gives them a speed bonus of 1.

Special Ability: Preemptive Shot
Preemptive Shot triggers when the Gunslinger/Bounty Hunter is targeted by a ranged attack in combat, shooting their attacker with a ranged shot before the enemy has a chance to fire. There is a possibility that the whole attacking stack is killed by Preemptive Shot, therefore dealing no damage. Gunslingers can only do this once per round, while Bounty Hunters can do this an unlimited number of times. Preemptive Shot deals the same damage as a normal attack and consumes 1 shot.

Preemptive Shot works against all ranged shots, except ranged AoE attacks: Liches' Death Clouds and Magogs' Fireball Attacks, even if target Gunslingers or Bounty Hunters as a central hex. It also does not activate against the ranged attacking war machines, the Ballista and Cannon.

Preemptive Shot does not trigger if the Gunslinger or Bounty Hunter is prevented from performing a ranged attack, such as if it is under the effect of the Forgetfulness spell or there is an enemy unit adjacent to it and the hero does not have the Bow of the Sharpshooter equipped.
end of user commentary

War machine is a common term used for referring to either an Ammo Cart, Ballista, Cannon, First Aid Tent or Catapult. Basically they are all special combat units which are available in most of the battles. The only exceptions are creature banks and shipwrecks, where none of the war machines are used. Furthermore, Catapults are only used in siege combats. All war machines have a special slot reserved just for that particular war machine.

Typically, war machines except the Catapult are bought from Blacksmiths, which sell different war machine depending on the town. Additionally, war machines can be bought from an Adventure Map location called the War Machine Factory, which sell all war machines (except Catapults and Cannons). Cannons can be purchased from a Cannon Yard. Stronghold has the special building Ballista Yard, where a visiting hero can buy a Ballista. All heroes have the Catapult with them, and if one is destroyed in the combat, a new one is automatically added to hero's catapult slot.

All war machines are immobile and unaffected by morale (Ballista and Cannon can have a lucky strike, and in the Horn of the Abyss, they both can have bad luck). Additionally, war machines do not affect the hero's movement. On the battlefield AI considers Catapult, Ballista and Cannon as ranged units, ignoring the moment they can not be blocked.

War machines can be traded between heroes, but can not be dismissed or put in the hero's backpack. In hota, war machines (except the catapult) can be dismissed.
The Catapult only appears on the battlefield when siege attacking enemy towns with walls, which requires the town to have a fort, citadel, or castle. Its main use is to attack and destroy the walls in order to enable ground troops to attack the defenders. The Catapult can also attack and destroy the arrow towers of citadels and castles. The ballistics secondary skill enhances the performance of the Catapult. Basic ballistics gives the player control over the Catapult making it possible to aim at particular parts of the siege structures. During a siege, the Catapult shoots after the arrow towers, but before any other troop. In damage calculations, Catapult goes as level 1 unit, its AI Value is 500.
A ballista is a missile weapon that, like ranged units, shoots projectiles toward enemy troops, but is unable to retaliate against attacks. It can shoot even if one or several enemy stacks are adjacent to it. It has a basic damage range (of 2–3) like creatures, but the damage calculation is different. The formula for the calculation of damage is (2–3)*(hero's attack + 1). The Artillery and Archery secondary skills increase this damage. The ballista acts at the end of every combat round, followed only by the First Aid Tent, and can be controlled when a hero has learned any level of Artillery. Contrary to what its in-game statistics indicate, a ballista has unlimited shots (fixed in hota).

In damage calculations, Ballista goes as level 5 unit, its AI Value is 600. For the Map-Editor, it is an artifact equipped in the War Machine 1 slot. Sometime when AI calculate that you have less army to survive for next run in the battle, and before Ballista to shot, you'll get a message only once, for retreat your hero.
{{user commentary|
In general, the importance of War Machines is decreasing throughout the game, as you have big army and powerful damage spells.

The Ballista is a war machine of some limited use, however it requires a high (25+) Attack skill before it starts dealing enough damage to justify its 2500 Gold cost. The Artillery skill can offset this somewhat, but comes with the high opportunity cost of omitting a potentially more useful secondary skill such as Offense or Armorer. The above restrictions generally limit the Ballista to might heroes with high Attack skill. Of the four towns that sell Ballistae, Barbarians from Stronghold are most likely to reach this skill - more defensive heroes such as those from Fortress will not be able to make use of the Ballista as efficiently. Note that if you don't have Artillery skill, Ballista can spoil the battle if you want to blind the only remaining enemy stack and resurrect/animate your whole army. It will shoot and unblind the enemy. Most of this applies to the Cannon as well.

The First Aid tent is most often useless, even with the (also nearly useless) First Aid skill at its top level. Its main limitation is that it cannot resurrect killed creatures, so it's useless for low-level creatures. The only case in which a First Aid Tent is useful is when a player obtains a high-level creature early in the game. Setting a hero up with 1-2 high level creatures and a first-aid tent ensures that the healing is not wasted and allows the player to clear wandering monsters from the map more easily. You may start with a hero with First Aid tent, even if your blacksmith doesn't produce it, and rush through the map using 1-2 sixth level creatures.

The Ammo Cart's unlimited ammunition is usually unnecessary besides a very long battle, but is extremely useful in the few situations when it is needed. Most shooters in the game have enough ammunition to attack 12 times, with many carrying more. The few exceptions are Master Gremlins and Medusa Queens (8 shots), and Medusas, Pirates, and Corsairs (only 4 shots!). With good Morale, these creatures run the risk of quickly depleting their ammunition over the course of a battle. This can be the difference between defeat and victory, particularly in a bloody castle siege. If the enemy Catapult can be destroyed and their flying units killed, even a single shooter with an ammunition cart can eventually drive of the enemy if the walls are still intact.

As every hero gets a Catapult free of cost which is only deployed for siege warfare, there is little choice involved in catapult usage other than targeting with the Ballistics skill.
Refugee Camp is an adventure map location, where a hero can hire a small number of random type creatures (including neutral creatures). The creature type changes every week, and the number available is their basic growth. Unlike External Creature Dwellings, Refugee Camps do not give you first level units for free. Also unlike external creature dwellings, Refugee Camps cannot be flagged, and therefore can't be used with Portal of Summoning.

It is not possible to find Sharpshooters, Enchanters, , , or Faerie Dragons in a Refugee Camp.

Steel Golems can randomly appear at and be recruited from a Refugee Camp despite having no standard creature dwelling.
Compared to other level 2 creatures, Leprechauns have decent power, and their Luck-related bonuses can be useful even if they never actually attack.
