FeraCZ: /* Faction Specific Strategies */ Changed Strategy to user commentary (dead link anchor)

General Strategies
Choosing a good primary (main) hero
* A good main hero should be good in battle, and some heroes are equipped with unnecessary secondary skills like Eagle Eye and Learning. Avoid them. Archery, Offense or Armorer are much better.
* Might heroes are better with big armies than magic heroes. Every point in Attack and Defense is useful for every creature, while too much Spell Power or too much Knowledge can be of limited use. Sometimes you need a simple spell more than very advanced spells, that need much more power and knowledge to be effective.
* Heroes that can be better with each level are better than ones that do not benefit much from having a lot of experience. Crag Hack, Mephala or Malekith are better and better with each level, while also combining their specialty with specific primary skills.
* Good hero can move fast. Someone with Logistics (or Navigation on water maps) is much better than slow heroes. Not only can fast heroes collect more resources, they also gain experience faster. So, Gunnar or Kyrre are good options.
* Estates, Scholar, and other similar skills are useful, but normally the main hero does not have enough skill slots to have room for them. There are simply more important skills needed for those slots.
* No magic skills? Not good. Try to obtain at least one or two. Your main hero shouldn't have all four though since there will be not enough slots for other important skills.
* Some Secondary Skills are great in combination. For example, if you like to use the spell Chain Lightning, the combination of Air Magic, Sorcery and Wisdom is very powerful. Adding Intelligence can improve it even more.
* Some heroes start with a lot of creatures. With heroes that have unit tier 1, 2, or 3 specializations, you can clear mine defenders easier. However, choose units that you will use in the final phases of the game as well.
* There are a lot of good heroes and bad heroes. Use the forums and Wiki to know more about them.
* Find your build. Different towns need different heroes, but some of the heroes are great in any town, while others are usable only in one town. For example, Valeska is only good in Castle towns, while Orrin is good in every town - and even better in towns with more ranged units - or when using archers from multiple towns. Having Marksmen, Magi, Zealots and Titans in one army is great for this hero.
* Choose your hero based on the map. For example, are you playing on a map with lots of snow or swamp? If so, consider a hero with Pathfinding.
* Some magic heroes are great in the hands of a skilled player. Some examples include Eovacius withhota, Thant, and Jeddite.
* Overall, Overlords and Barbarians are among the stronger heroes, while Planeswalkers and Alchemists are among the weaker heroes.

Some of the best primary heroes: Orrin, Mephala, Crag Hack, Gunnar, Dessa, and Tazar.

Choosing a good secondary (helper) hero
* Estates, scholar and logistics are some of the very good secondary skills for heroes, that are not designed for fighting.
* Normally, secondary heroes will have much less experience than main heroes. It is possible that they will learn only a small amount of secondary skills.
* Gold and estates specialities are extremely good. They can provide you with gold, so you can have capitol, level 7 creature generator and many other buildings faster.
* During 4 months, single gold specialist can provide you with 39 200 gold. Enough for 4 capitols or 1 entire week of all creatures from single town. Leena can get you about 150 000 gold.
* Logistics is good, if you need to move new fresh forces from your town to the main hero, fighting several days from your town.
* In need of gems? Crystals? Mercury? Sulfur? Or simply you have many towns and you can trade surplus? There are heroes like Rissa that can help you out.
* Scholar can help you with two things: Exchanging spells between important heroes, and also so your fighting hero can get a special spell, that some of your new heroes have. Great, if you need Prayer and you find Loynis in the tavern etc.
* Ballista costs as much as a hero. So it is better to recruit a new hero and swap ballista to your main hero. Same with cannon (and cannon is much more expensive than Jeremy the captain). You can also use Rion, if you need first aid tent in the castle town.

Some of the best secondary heroes: Leena, Lord Haart, Octavia, Aine, Rissa, Sephinroth, Jeremy...

It is up to a player, if his first hero is a good primary or a good secondary hero.

Early Capitol
This tactics is great on closed maps, when all enemies are far and not doing any problems in the first turns. If you rush for early capitol, you can have more gold than other players.
Pros: You can have more income, so you can build new units and buildings with enough gold. You can also have more heroes than usual.
Cons: With limited amount of creature buildings, you cannot make a good defense early. You also cannot attack all the mine protectors. So while you will not have a problem with gold, you may miss enought ore, crystals etc in the city development.

Rushing for capitol is of course hard on higher difficulty. Capitol costs 10 000 gold, castle and citadel costs 7 500 gold. Many buildings, like blacksmiths, are not that useful early on (or almost useless for some time), yet you simply need them. However, difference in two weeks, with capitol and without capitol, is 14 x 2000 gold, 28 000 gold in total.

For early capitol, it is a good idea to pick a good secondary hero (or start with someone) with gold speciality and/or estates. Lord Haart and Leena are two best choices.

Example build order:

# Town Hall
# Magic Guild
# Marketplace
# Blacksmith
# City Hall
# Citadel
# Castle
# Capitol
# Resource silo (if needed)
# unupgraded creature dwellings (so you can have as much units as possible)
# other buildings

Dragogeddon
A tactical maneuver, wherein the hero aims to cast the Armageddon spell without harming his own troops. In the original roe, Black Dragons and Gold Dragons were the best creatures to have when using this tactic, hence the name dragogeddon. Important note is that Red and Green Dragons, who are, respectively, basic versions of Black and Gold ones, are immune only to 1-3 level spells, and thus will be normally damaged by Armageddon which is level 4 spell.

In order for dragogeddon tactics to work in the best possible way, the hero requires:
* at least advanced Wisdom to learn Armageddon
* high power skill for Armageddon to cause as much damage as possible
* reasonable knowledge for sufficient spell points to cast the spell at least few times
* creatures with appropriate spell immunity to cause damage only to enemy units.

Possible creatures for the dragogeddon tactics are:
* Black Dragons from Dungeon (but not Red!)
* Gold Dragons from Rampart (but not Green!)
* Efreet Sultans from Inferno
* Fire Elementals, Magma Elementals, Magic Elementals or Phoenixes from Conflux

Additionally, golems may be used for the tactic because of their Spell damage reduction ability. For this purpose, Tower's Stone and Iron Golems are typically the easiest to gather. However, dragogeddon tactics are often used in situations where it is essential to rapidly – preferably in the first round of combat – destroy enemy forces, and therefore golems with a slow speed rating are not a preferable choice. Conflux's Fire Elementals and Magic Elementals are not significantly better. Another option is using Archangels or Arch Devils who are faster than Gold or Black Dragons, casting Anti-magic on them in the first turn and Armageddon afterwards (beware that Anti-magic disallows you to resurrect units).

The combination artifact Power of the Dragon Father, while hard to obtain, makes all of the hero's units immune to Armageddon, allowing dragogeddon usage with any army.

Another situation for dragogeddon is when a player needs to weaken an enemy hero's main force. When used for this purpose, the attacking method is typically hit-and-run, which makes speed essential and Phoenixes the best choice. It is vital for the hero to act first in the combat, cast Armageddon and then surrender (or retreat), and then repeat the process. In an ideal situation, the enemy hero's movement has ended up near the defending player's town, when it is a short distance to attack the enemy hero over and over again with Phoenixes combined with Armageddon.

The biggest threats for dragogeddon are Orb of Inhibition, disallowing the use of all spells in combat and Recanter's Cloak, suppressing spells any higher than level 3.

In general, Dungeon's Black Dragons are more likely to be part of Dragogeddon than Rampart's Gold Dragons, since Armageddon spell appears only in evil alignment towns (Inferno, Necropolis, and Dungeon). If a map has Rampart and/or Conflux but no evil alignment towns, it is almost impossible to use dragogeddon tactics.

Artifact Monopoly
A tactic for the turn's first human player of every month. Since all Artifact Merchants carry the same stock, the human player who is first in the turn order gets the first choice of artifacts to buy every month. This can be a huge advantage during multiplayer games, as the computers always act after the human players.

If playing with sod expansion, a solid use of the strategy is to buy every combination artifact piece they can afford at the first round of the month. After a few months, and with some luck in adventuring, the first player - using this tactic - may combine few of the easier combination artifacts like Bow of the Sharpshooter, Cloak of the Undead King or Wizard's Well - all quite powerful.

A mite, but not an enemy, very charming, no enmities
If you don't have the resources to run that one town you need the troops from, let the enemy capture it and spend all their resources building it for you, then when they least expect it, take it back with minimal force. Losses are 500 (basic city) over 1000 (with Town Hall building) over 2000 (City Hall) gold to 4000 gold (Capitol city, losing the Capitol to the enemy destroys the 10k gold Capitol building) each day and the added costs of recapturing the town - but the Resources needed for better buildings might even be harder to come by and you want that high level unit buildings to be built in the long term, why not let the enemy build them.

Stack divide, and conquer
Flanking has its uses, Cyclops, Wraith and Genie units with their casting or castle wall damage feature work without considering the unit amount of the stack , so Cyclops that have damage castle walls as a special will get one castle wall attack per Cyclops stack (or even advanced Ballistics and thus two shots when the stack is a Cyclops King stack), the number of Cyclops in the stack is not relevant and Genies will get their usual allotment of spells without regarding the stack size too - one Genie and his utility spells is as important as 100 considering spells that they can cast - as opposed to Faerie Dragons that use damaging spells that depend on the number of units the stack has. Genies are level 5 creatures, a Cyclops is a level 6 creature, both are a little bit faster than level 1 or 2 units in general - and those tend to die off easily midgame so the open places in the army of the hero are not actually wasted given utility spells on worthwhile creatures or faster sieges and additionally higher level creatures also tend to move faster on the adventure map.

FeraCZ: reworded the heroes after level 1

Secondary skills

Secondary skills are beneficial qualities of heroes. There are 28 different secondary skills and each one has three levels: basic, advanced and expert. Each level increases the capability of the secondary skill making it more influential. Typically in custom scenarios heroes start with either two secondary skills at basic level or one at advanced level. Each hero can have up to eight secondary skills.

Secondary skills can be divided into three categories: combat skills, magic skills and adventure skills. Combat skills affect directly to combat capabilities of creatures under hero's command; magic skills affect hero's abilities to cast spells; and adventure skills improves hero's adventure map qualities.

Once secondary skill is learned, it cannot be removed. As a result, secondary skill choices on level-ups are among the most important decisions in the game.

Secondary skill advancement rules
If a hero does not already possess eight secondary skills, he/she gets an offer of two different skill during level-up. The first offer is a skill s/he already has but which is not yet at expert level. The second offer is random, but the probabilities of the skills offered are dependent on the hero's class. If a hero already has all secondary skills at expert level, both offers are random. If a hero already has eight secondary skills, both offers are random but within the skills pool this hero is allowed to have.

There are few other ways to acquire a secondary skill. They can be learned from scholars, witch huts, universities, and seafaring acadamies on the adventure map. In ab, Conflux has a special building magic university that can teach any number of the four schools of magic. Additionally, heroes can learn secondary skills thanks to events or Pandora's Boxes.

The random seed for offering skills is separate for every hero and is fixed at start of the scenario, not excluding for heroes not yet hired by any player; therefore, even when reloading, or hiring, re-hiring and levelling your heroes in different order, they still will be offered the same sequence of skills upon reaching the next level. The only option to change these is when receiving another secondary skill, e.g. from Witch Hut or Scholar. Every choice affects future upgrade options, so upon replaying the same saved game the alteration of choices may actually lead to the entirely different final combination of skills.

Heroes are also guaranteed to be offered Wisdom or school of magic every few levels: Wisdom will be offered at level 6 for Might heroes, and at level 3 for Magic heroes if it was not offered before. It will be offered again from whenever it was offered at most 6 levels later for Might heroes, and at most 3 levels later for Magic heroes. The same applies to one of the schools of magic every 4 levels for Might heroes and every 3 levels for Magic heroes. The only exception is the Elementalist class, which uses the same counter as Might heroes. In HotA numbers for Elementalist class were changed to match the numbers for Magic heroes.

The algorithm can be summed as following:
# Create two categories of skills: The ones hero has at the Basic/Advanced level, and the ones the hero has not learned yet. Ignore Expert level skills and globally banned skills (e.g. Navigation).
# If one of the categories is empty, offer two skills from the other category; if there is only one skill to offer, it will be forcefully added to the hero; if there is none, level-up with gaining only primary skill.
# If the hero is guaranteed to get offered Wisdom or School of Magic, do as such. This applies to both slots (left and right skill). Wisdom has always priority, the Schools of Magic are resolved based on the relative probabilities (see 4.)
# For each slot, if the skill is not guaranteed to the rule above, select the skill based on the weighed probability, according to the hero class. If the hero's class is banned from obtaining a specific skill but the hero has it, consider the weight to be equal to 1.
# If a Wisdom or School of Magic was offered (either by chance or by force), reset the respective counter.

Heroes starting at higher levels, such as those from Prison, are assumed to have always selected the left-hand skill option during their fictious level-ups, meaning they will prioritize upgrading their existing skills over learning new ones.

<div style="clear:both;"></div>

Frequency Across All Hero Classes
The following chart is a chart for all hero classes and what skills are the most and least common in the game; the percentage represents roughly the frequency a skill is offered. Calculating the average frequency at which a skill is offered in a category is simple; each hero has probabilities to be offered a skill in increments of 1/112. Taking Necromancy as a simple example, all heroes except for Necropolis heroes have a 0/112 chance of being offered it; while both Necropolis hero classes have a 10/112 chance of being offered it (if not starting with it). This would bring the sum of lots to 20. Given that there are 18 hero classes, 18 x 112 = 2016 lots in total calculation. Thus, we can divide 20 by 2016 to get the frequency the skill is offered among all hero classes, which is roughly 0.99%, making it the rarest naturally offered skill in the game.

In Horn of the Abyss, the calculations are trickier, as each hero class does not have an exact 112 lots of skills, but rather each hero class has 112 to 121 lots of all skills. Things are further complicated by Resistance being banned by default on all maps and templates and consequently the vast majority of games played not having it in the lots. Furthermore, Navigation is also banned by default on all random map templates without water (and the vast majority of templates were created with the "None" water setting in mind, as with water, border guards and other barriers can often be bypassed). Removing both Navigation and Resistance from the lots make the lots range from 102 to 111.

In this chart, the sum of each column will be over 100%, as Navigation and Resistance are not counted, and their listed percentages are not their true percentages, but are there only to compare to other skills.

An example calculation: on average, each hero class has 107 lots if Resistance and Navigation are both disabled. There are currently (as of 1.6.1) 20 hero classes in Horn of the Abyss, which makes the grand sum of lots 107 x 20 = 2140. Interference has 54 lots across all hero classes, making its percent 54 / 2140 ≈ 2.52%. Resistance has 68 lots across all hero classes, making its percent 68 / 2140 ≈ 3.18%; but this is only a comparative value, rather than a true percentage, as the chance to get Resistance if it is disabled is 0. A real value could be computed if Resistance was enabled and Interference disabled, or if both were enabled; however enabling or disabling any skill will change the grand sum and thus change the percentages of all skills. For example, if all skills are enabled, the grand sum becomes 2294. Interference's average chances becomes 54 / 2294 ≈ 2.35%; while Resistance's average chances becomes 68 / 2294 ≈ 2.96%; while Artillery's chances go from roughly 4.63% to 4.32%.

The chart below assumes Resistance and Navigation are both disabled and the figures given for those skills are only for comparison rather than true percentages.

Secondary skills are divided into three categories: combat skills, magic skills and adventure skills. Combat skills affect directly to combat capabilities of creatures under hero's command; magic skills affect hero's abilities to cast spells; and adventure skills improves hero's adventure map qualities.

Once secondary skill is learned, it can not be removed. The fact that hero can not remove secondary skill, makes the choosing of them one of the most important decisions in the game.

They can be learned from scholars, witch huts or universities on the adventure map. In ab Conflux has a special building magic university that can teach any number of the four schools of magic. Additionally, at map editor it is possible to set events on the map, that teaches secondary skills.

# Heroes starting at higher level than 1, e.g. in Prison, are considered to have always picked the left skill, so they will prioritize upgrading to learning new skills.

They can be learned from scholars, witch huts or universities on the adventure map. In ab Conflux has a special building magic university that can teach any number of the four schools of magic. Additionally, at map editor it is possible to set events on the map, that teaches secondary skills.

The Elementalist class uses the same counter as Might heroes.

# Heroes starting at higher level than 1, e.g. in Prison, are considered to have always picked the left skill, so they will prioritize upgrading to learning new skills.

Secondary skills are divided into three categories: combat skills, magic skills and adventure skills. Combat skills affect directly to combat capabilities of creatures under hero's command; magic skills affect hero's abilities to cast spells; and adventure skills improves hero's adventure map qualities.

They can be learned from scholars, witch huts or universities on the adventure map. In ab Conflux has a special building magic university that can teach any number of the four schools of magic. Additionally, at map editor it is possible to set events on the map, that teaches secondary skills.

Once secondary skill is learned, it can not be removed. The fact that hero can not remove secondary skill, makes the choosing of them one of the most important decisions in the game.

The Elementalist class uses the same counter as Might heroes.

# Heroes starting at higher level than 1, e.g. in Prison, are considered to have always picked the left skill, so they will prioritize upgrading to learning new skills.

It might seem unassuming at first, but a hero that knows this spell camping out enemy shipyards or towns with shipyards built can force enemy players to ration their resources rather than wasting them on new boats that just get immediately scuttled. Also handy for cutting off an enemy hero's escape route (assuming they can't use Water Walk, Fly or possess the artifacts that grant either effects).

Note that Summon Boat cannot be used for stealing enemy boats, even if they are unoccupied.
|}
The spell may only be cast on the adventure map and next to a shoreline. In order to Summon Boat spell to work, there must be an unoccupied (free) tile to summon the boat. If there are several available tiles, a boat appears at one of the top priority (see the scheme).

On basic level there must be an unoccupied boat somewhere on the map: neutral one or belonging to a player. The boat counts as "one of your hero's" if it was disembarked or summoned by any of your heroes or was bought by you in a shipyard - no matter if a shipyard belongs to a player or an ally. Enemy or allied boats cannot be summoned with the basic Summon Boat. A boat which was the pre-generated or set by a map-maker counts as a neutral one. Boats belonging to a defeated player do not turn into neutral.

At advanced and expert level, a boat will be created if there are no free boats to summon.

An unsuccessful (%hero tried to summon a boat, but failed) attempt to summon a boat consumes spell points, but not in case of (There are no boats to summon) message for a basic level spell. Note if there are no boats to summon, the success is still checked first, so a player can waste some spell points just to find out the attempt is futile.

Summoning a boat will make the closest unoccupied boat to disappear, which sometimes can lead to tactical choice to cast the spell.
* It is removed from the following Pandora's Box sets: "all water spells" and "all 1st level spells".
* It cannot be obtained by Sea Captain's Hat or Admiral's Hat artifacts because they are banned as well. Tome of Water will not include Summon Boat.

{{user commentary|
It is referred in the description of expert level Summon Boat spell, that the spell could fail if all possible 64 boats are occupied. However, boats cannot be summoned if a hero is already in a boat, and there can only be 64 heroes wandering on the Adventure Map at the same time. This leads to a situation, that if all heroes are in the boats, none of them can cast the spell.
{{user commentary|
First Aid is useful on early stage of the mission in those cities, whose Blacksmith produces First Aid tents (apart from Necropolis). Healing Unicorns or Wyverns will help rushing through the map without slow and weak units in the army. However, in major battles a tent is not that useful. Therefore, First Aid secondary skill is better on small maps, and of course useless if you play for a town unable to produce tents (and there's no opportunity to get one somewhere else).

First Aid is one of the less used secondary skills in the game. At Expert level it only heals up to 100 health points, which means that all creatures up to the fifth level and most of the sixth level creatures can be fully healed . However, considering that the healing is only given to a single monster, the impact of the First Aid Tent is almost always negligible. Though First Aid isn't useless, most other skills in the game are generally more useful.

The most common situation where First Aid can be worth getting is if the player manages to get one or more level 6 or 7 creatures early on in the game (e.g. Refugee Camp), as these units can receive the full 1–100 health provided by this skill. Furthermore, it should be noted that unlike most other skills in the game, the effect from First Aid can never run out of mana or ammunition. As a result, it can be very effective during long battles in the early game where the player has at least one level 6 or 7 unit, because as long as the First Aid tent survives and the high leveled units do not take more than 100 damage per turn, they are effectively made imperishable by First Aid. However, it can still be more advantageous to choose another secondary skill than First Aid even in these situations, as the First Aid unlike most other skills will become less useful the longer the game goes on, as the 1–100 health provided by it becomes less and less substantial.

In patch 1.7.0 of Horn of the Abyss, the First Aid Tent now also has its minimum healing increased, making it more reliable in the aforementioned scenarios.
Expert level of Sorrow is quite useful against wandering creatures at least in situations where it is essential that they do not receive an extra turn due to their +1 morale. However, casting Sorrow against a computer or a human player is questionable. Depending on the enemy morale, it will either reduce the chance (or eliminate) of enemy troops getting the extra turn or increase the chance of them to lose a turn. As the chances for bad morale are higher, the latter it is more favourable option. In other words, reducing enemy morale to -3 is better than reducing it to +1 - and if your opponent has morale in excess of 3, Sorrow might only reduce it to +2, or not at all. In conclusion, against wandering monsters the Sorrow is sometimes useful, but against human and computer players there are typically better spells to cast than Sorrow. In general, Sorrow is not as powerful as many other 4th level spells (Armageddon, Berserk, Resurrection), and possibly takes too much spell points than it is worthy of.

As opposed to what the manual states, Wisdom is not required to cast third or higher level spells, only to learn them. For example Solmyr has 4th level spell (Chain Lightning) but he is still able to cast it without Advanced Wisdom. Also spell scrolls, Tomes of Air, Earth, Fire and Water, and Spellbinder's Hat enable hero to cast any level of spell regardless of their level of Wisdom skill.

Wisdom will be offered at level 6 for Might heroes and Elementalists, and at level 3 for Magic heroes (exept Elementalists) if it was not offered before and the hero does not know Wisdom yet. In case Wisdom was declined, it will be offered again from whenever it was offered at most 6 levels later for Might heroes and Elementalists, and at most 3 levels later for Magic heroes (except Elementalists). In HotA numbers for Elementalist class were changed to match the numbers for Magic oriented heroes.
{{user commentary|
Wisdom is perhaps the most essential Heroes 3 secondary skill. It should be learned by every hero and, when offered on basic level, never rejected (one may decline advanced or expert wisdom, if there is an extremely useful basic secondary skill proposed). Possibly except are those ones who are in a deep reserve, and whose job is just to summon troops from adventure map dwellings and collect weekly resources; however, in case of an unexpected battle they should be able, for example, to destroy significant part of enemy's troops with Armageddon, to get quickly to a town via Town Portal, and/or to resurrect/animate units killed by enemy. In general, expert wisdom is not always a must (while Dimension Door, Fly, and Implosion are extremely mighty), but advanced wisdom is very important since abovementioned 4 level spells are not only powerful, they can change the whole gameplay, and Chain Lightning, Clone, and Berserk are also very powerful. 4th level of Mage Guild is arguably the best in the game. Moreover, it is the highest level of spells which can be learned by Eagle Eye, Scholar, or in a Shrine (the latter can provide 4th-level spells only in hota).

Wisdom is nearly compulsory to every hero regardless of the faction, hero class or map size. It may be unnecessary in simple layout small or medium sized maps, where the game advances quickly towards the end. Another exception would be, that if Orb of Inhibition or Recanter's Cloak is found early in the game.

Heroes starting with Advanced Wisdom can guarantee themselves a random Magic school if they pick Expert Wisdom at second level (unlike Might heroes, e.g. Tazar, whose upgrade to Expert skill at level 2 might get them offered two useless skills).

War machine is a common term used for referring to either an Ammo Cart, Ballista, First Aid Tent or Catapult. Basically they are all special combat units which are available in most of the battles. The only exceptions are creature banks and shipwrecks, where none of the war machines are used. Furthermore, Catapults are only used in siege combats. All war machines have a special slot reserved just for that particular war machine.

Typically, war machines except the Catapult are bought from Blacksmiths, which sell different war machine depending on the town. Additionally, war machines can be bought from an Adventure Map location called the War Machine Factory, which sell all war machines (except Catapults). Stronghold has the special building Ballista Yard, where a visiting hero can buy a Ballista. All heroes have the Catapult with them, and if one is destroyed in the combat, a new one is automatically added to hero's catapult slot.

All war machines are immobile and unaffected by morale (Ballista and Cannon can have a lucky strike, and in the Horn of the Abyss they both can have bad luck). Additionally, war machines do not affect the hero's movement. First Aid Tents act last at the combat round. In damage calculations, First Aid Tent goes as level 1 unit, its AI Value is 300. The Catapult only appears on the battlefield when siege attacking enemy towns with walls, which requires the town to have a fort, citadel, or castle. Its main use is to attack and destroy the walls in order to enable ground troops to attack the defenders. The Catapult can also attack and destroy the arrow towers of citadels and castles. The ballistics secondary skill enhances the performance of the Catapult. Basic ballistics gives the player control over the Catapult making it possible to aim at particular parts of the siege structures. During a siege, the Catapult shoots after the arrow towers, but before any other troop. In damage calculations Catapult goes as level 1 unit, its AI Value is 500.
A ballista is a missile weapon that, like ranged units, shoots projectiles toward enemy troops, but is unable to retaliate against attacks. It can shoot even if one or several enemy stacks are adjacent to it. It has a basic damage range (of 2–3) like creatures, but the damage calculation is different. The formula for the calculation of damage is (2–3)*(hero's attack + 1). The Artillery and Archery secondary skills increase this damage. The ballista acts at the end of every combat round, followed only by the First Aid Tent, and can be controlled when a hero has learned any level of Artillery. Contrary to what its in-game statistics indicate, a ballista has unlimited shots (fixed in hota).
In damage calculations Ballista goes as level 5 unit, its AI Value is 600. For the Map Editor its an artifact equipped in the War Machine 1 slot.
{{user commentary|
In general, the importance of War Machines is decreasing throughout the game, as you have big army and powerful damage spells.

The Ballista is a war machine of some limited use, however it requires a high (25+) Attack skill before it starts dealing enough damage to justify its 2500 Gold cost. The Artillery skill can offset this somewhat, but comes with the high opportunity cost of omitting a potentially more useful secondary skill such as Offense or Armorer. The above restrictions generally limit the Ballista to might heroes with high Attack skill. Of the four towns that sell Ballistae, Barbarians from Stronghold are most likely to reach this skill - more defensive heroes such as those from Fortress will not be able to make use of the Ballista as efficiently. Note that if you don't have Artillery skill, Ballista can spoil the battle if you want to blind the only remaining enemy stack and resurrect/animate your whole army. It will shoot and unblind the enemy.

The First Aid tent is most often useless, even with the (also nearly useless) First Aid skill at its top level. Its main limitation is that it cannot resurrect killed creatures, so it's useless for low-level creatures. The only case in which a First Aid Tent is useful is when a player obtains a high-level creature early in the game. Setting a hero up with 1-2 high level creatures and a first-aid tent ensures that the healing is not wasted and allows the player to clear wandering monsters from the map more easily. You may start with a hero with First Aid tent, even if your blacksmith doesn't produce it, and rush through the map using 1-2 sixth level creatures.

The Ammo Cart's unlimited ammunition is usually unnecessary besides a very long battle, but is extremely useful in the few situations when it is needed. Most shooters in the game have enough ammunition to attack 12 times, with many carrying more. The few exceptions are Master Gremlins and Medusa Queens (8 shots), and Medusas, Pirates, and Corsairs (only 4 shots!). With good Morale, these creatures run the risk of quickly depleting their ammunition over the course of a battle. This can be the difference between defeat and victory, particularly in a bloody castle siege. If the enemy Catapult can be destroyed and their flying units killed, even a single shooter with an ammunition cart can eventually drive of the enemy if the walls are still intact.

As every hero gets a Catapult free of cost which is only deployed for siege warfare, there is little choice involved in catapult usage other than targeting with the Ballistics skill.

On the battlefield AI considers Catapult, Ballista and Cannon as ranged units, ignoring the moment they can not be blocked.
