Morale represents troop stack's willingness to fight. High morale can allow creatures to receive an extra attack during combat round, while low morale can cause them to freeze and lose the turn. Good morale is received after the troop stack has acted, which means that the creatures will have a chance to act again immediately. Bad morale happens at the very beginning of creature stack's turn, and causes them to "freeze in panic".

The morale value of a creature stack can vary from -3 to +3. The game manual erroneously states the probability of receiving good or bad morale is equal at 1/24 (4.17 %) times morale value. As shown in the table on the right, it is more probable to receive bad morale than good morale. The troop stack's morale value is mainly determined by army's morale rating, which acts as a bonus to the individual morale of its troops. Thus the creature stack's morale can differ from hero's army's morale. Army's morale can be affected in various ways, which are listed below.

Golems, undead and elementals are unaffected by morale, meaning that their morale rating is always zero.
How it works
All killed enemy creatures can be raised as skeletons. This includes sacrificed creatures, cloned creatures, summoned elementals and even war machines. If the victorious hero's army has no empty slots available and no Skeletons, but includes Skeleton Warriors, the killed enemy creatures will be raised as Skeleton Warriors, but only 66.6% compared to Skeletons. If there are no available slots and no skeletons (either kind) in the army, none of the killed enemy creatures are raised.

The number of skeletons brought back at the end of the combat depends on three main factors:
# Number of creatures in killed stacks
# Amount of health of killed stacks
# Level of Necromancy skill

First, the total number of raised Skeletons can never exceed the number of creatures slain in combat. Second, the total health of raised Skeletons can never exceed the total health of killed creatures. Third, the level of Necromancy skill used in calculations can never be more than 100%, although it is technically possible for a hero to have Necromancy skill above 100%. These rules in sod are applied to every killed stack individually (in hota the amount of creatures raised is calculated by the overall number of killed creatures), and always rounded towards 1.

The health of the enemy creature killed affects the efficiency that it is revived as per table:

1 hp = 16.6% efficiency
2 hp = 33.3%
3 hp = 50% efficiency
4 hp = 66.6% efficiency
5 hp = 83.3% efficiency
6 hp or higher = 100% efficiency
So a hero with 50% necromancy, who killed 100 creatures with 6 hp or higher, will obtain 50 skeletons, whereas if he were to kill 100 peasants (who have only 1 hp), only 8 skeletons would be obtained. This can be also interpreted as the hero being able to revive only 50 hp total (8 skeletons have 48 hp).

Additionally, with Cloak of the Undead King the same rules apply to Walking Dead, Wights and Liches. As they have more health, fewer are raised. And if a hero only has upgraded versions in the army and no free slots, the "two thirds rule" is applied (the health difference between basic and upgraded creatures does not play any role in this case).
{{user commentary|
Necromancy is the basis of Necropolis faction. By default there cannot be a Necropolis hero without this skill, so if a very important basic skill like Wisdom or Earth Magic is offered together with improving Necromancy, ignore Necromancy. You will get it sooner or later, while an ability to learn Animate Dead and cast it properly won't appear for every level. However, if your hero wears Cloak of the Undead King, expert Necromancy is exactly what you need, as rising Liches, the only Necropolis shooters with good stats, will make you almost invincible. In that case you might want to avoid battles prior to getting expert Necromancy, as 2-3 level Necropolis troops are significantly weaker than many other units of those levels.

For heroes from other towns, the Necromancy skill is undesirable as Skeletons are weak, slow and will spoil morale, and getting somewhat 5 Skeletons after a minor battle will be a total nonsense. Thus, if Necromancy came to a non-Necropolis hero, a better decision is to reload the game and avoid the source of it, unless your game is dedicated to Necropolis - if so, you may hire a supplying hero regardless of the class, who will increase the number of Skeletons.

Necropolis and Necromancy are often considered to be overpowered, and therefore frequently banned in multiplayer games (and tournaments).

While a hero might level up from an encounter and as a result increase their necromancy expertise - e.g. from basic to advanced - the level that is applied to the encounter is the one the hero had already attained when the encounter started. Level ups in necromancy, when they are attained by winning an encounter, only apply to encounters going forward.

Level ups in necromancy, when they are attained by winning an encounter, only apply to encounters going forward.

speculative

Day of Reckoning (or DoR) is a comprehensive expansion for Heroes of Might and Magic III, designed as a continuation of the classic RoE/AB/SoD expansions and akin to HotA.

The project aims to complete the story of the Heroes III game by introducing elements tied to the Reckoning event, the cut Forge content, and fill story gaps such as, for example, what Adelaide did during her stay in Vori or what happened between Dragon's Blood and Clash of the Dragons. In the spirit of the official expansions, it adds new features that both reference other Might and Magic elements and increase the depth of the gameplay, aiming to stay true to both the canon of the universe as well as the design philosophies of the game. The Forge-related elements are designed in consultation with Heroes III lead designer Gregory Fulton to stick as close as possible to the original concept and intent of the faction; including the ability to disable it outside of campaign maps.

Just as ab introduced elite units (the Enchanter and Sharpshooter) and sod introduced combination artifacts, Day of Reckoning introduces alternative units in the fashion of Heroes of Might and Magic IV. For example, a Palace town can produce either Nisse or Vikings, but not both. Pre-existing factions also get alternative units, such as Dryads for Rampart and Wood Elementals and Metal Elementals for Conflux. Pre-existing neutrals such as the Enchanter and Sharpshooter will be added to certain factions—not to recruit—but to fit in lore-wise and to negate the morale penalty with mixing factions.

A few elements have been derived from previous works of members of the team, such as the Tides of War mod or some of the Mod Design Team towns. Any such element, however, has been reworked to fit better with the concept of the expansion.

Unlike In the Wake of Gods-based mods, Day of Reckoning's new towns are added to the game without replacing any existing towns. The mod requires Shadow of Death or Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete to run.

Features
;New towns
* Palace -- good-aligned, Vori elves, nisses, and vikings
* -- neutral-aligned, the dark elves and gnomes who guarded the World Tree and were exiled to Jadame before most of the events in Heroes 3. Has a town building that boosts heroes' spell power, in the same way as the Necropolis has a building that boosts Necromancy.
* -- evil-aligned, the dystopian perversion of the Heavenly Forge by Kastore. The Forge is optional and can be toggled on or off before each match. It has a war machine focus, with replacements for existing war machines, a coilgun (presumably instead of ballista) from the basic blacksmith and another from a blacksmith upgrade, which is not decided yet between howitzer (catapult replacement?), ammo cart replacement, or first aid tent replacement.

* Potentially new road types, based on a hint that "asphalt and concrete and all that stuff" can have "other applications than a terrain".

Additionally, with Cloak of the Undead King, it is possible to raise other undead creatures instead of Skeletons. However, the cloak does not affect the skill percentages.

hota
In hota, the skill percentages are decreased to 5%, 10% and 15%.

# Level of Necromancy skill (calculated by adding up hero skill level, artifacts and Necromancy Amplifier)

The health of the enemy creature killed affects the efficiency of raising skeletons as per table:

+
Creature hp !! Necromancy efficiency
1 hp || 16.6%
2 hp || 33.3%
3 hp || 50%
4 hp || 66.6%
5 hp || 83.3%
6+ hp || 100%

As an example, a hero with 50% necromancy who kills 100 creatures with 6 HP or higher will obtain 50 skeletons, whereas if they were to kill 100 peasants (a creature with only 1 HP), only 8 skeletons would be obtained. In the first case the number of skeletons raised is limited by the total number of creatures available (100 creatures * 50% efficiency = 50 skeletons). In the latter case by the total HP of the killed creatures, as each skeleton requires a minimum of 6 HP to raise ((100 HP / 6 HP) * 50% efficiency = 8 + ⅓ ≈ 8 skeletons). This can be also interpreted as the hero being able to revive only 50 HP total (8 skeletons have 48 HP).

Additionally, with Cloak of the Undead King, the same rules apply to Walking Dead, Wights and Liches. As they have more health, less is raised. And if a hero only has upgraded versions in the army and no free slots, the "two thirds rule" is applied (the health difference between basic and upgraded creatures does not play any role in this case).

{{user commentary|
Necromancy is the basis of Necropolis faction. By default there cannot be a Necropolis hero without this skill and the chance of upgrading this skill is also very high, so if a very important basic skill like Wisdom or Earth Magic is offered together with improving Necromancy, ignore Necromancy. You will get it sooner or later.

For heroes from other towns, the Necromancy skill is undesirable as Skeletons are weak, slow and will spoil morale.

Necropolis and Necromancy are often considered to be overpowered, and therefore frequently banned in multiplayer games (and tournaments).
Heroes can be sent to explore the map, and reveal new areas as they travel. Heroes will discover treasures, wandering creatures, valuable resources, and significant locations, like mines, which will provide steady streams of resources; or creature dwellings where a hero may recruit troops for his army.

The Adventure Map consists of two layers: the surface and the subterranean level. Heroes can travel from one layer to another either through Subterranean Gate or Monoliths. The subterranean territory is displayed on its own map.

At the beginning of each day, mines and cities under player's control add to resources. Resources represent gold and raw materials a player may spend to improve towns, recruit troops, and perform other actions. Town buildings producing creatures do so on the first day of the week. The current date appears at the lower right corner of the Adventure Map screen.

Additionally, with Cloak of the Undead King, it is possible to raise other undead creatures instead of Skeletons. However, the cloak does not affect the skill percentages.

hota
In hota, the skill percentages are decreased to 5%, 10% and 15%.

# Level of Necromancy skill (calculated by adding up hero skill level, artifacts and Necromancy Amplifier)

* Soul prison – Necropolis grail structure, which increases Necromancy skill +20 % (bonus stacks if you have multiple towns with this building via Map Editor)

Additionally, with Cloak of the Undead King, it is possible to raise other undead creatures instead of Skeletons. However, the cloak does not affect the skill percentages.

hota
In hota, the skill percentages are decreased to 5%, 10% and 15%.

While the assembled artifact is equipped, Titan's Lightning bolt is set into hero's spell book. The spell has no (zero) casting cost and always does 600 points of damage regardless of hero's spell power or level of expertise in Air Magic.
