Wielding great wooden clubs, Ogres and Ogre Mages deal good damage and are very durable. The latter Ogres can cast the Bloodlust spell at advanced level on target allied troop, once per round and three times per battle.

Though hindered by their slow speed, Ogres and Ogre Magi have the highest attack and health of any 4th level unit in the game.

Adventure Map represents the part of Erathia, where the game takes place. Typically at the beginning of a scenario or a custom map, players can see only see areas within the view of their town's and/or heroes line of sight; the rest is shrouded. Heroes can be sent to explore the map, and reveal new areas as they travel. Heroes will discover treasures, wandering creatures, valuable resources, and significant locations, like mines, which will provide steady streams of resources; or creature dwellings where a hero may recruit troops for his army.

The Adventure Map consists of two layers: the surface and the subterranean level. Heroes can travel from one layer to another either through Subterranean Gate or Monoliths. The subterranean territory is displayed on its own map.

At the beginning of each day, mines and cities under player's control add to resources. Resources represent gold and raw materials a player may spend to improve towns, recruit troops, and perform other actions. Town buildings producing creatures do so on the first day of the week. The current date appears at the lower right corner of the Adventure Map screen.

Objects with repeatable actions may be repeated without spending movement points by pressing the space bar.

Artifact juggling is the technique of swapping artifacts in and out situationally, often on a turn-by-turn basis. This can be tedious, but also necessary in the late game to maximize the potential of main heroes.

Most common uses
* Maximizing knowledge for a magic spring or mana vortex. Common artifacts for this might be Sandals of the Saint, Dragon Wing Tabard, or Thunder Helmet.
* Utilizing the movement bonus of artifacts like Boots of Speed and Equestrian's Gloves and then swapping into artifacts with combat relevance like Ring of the Wayfarer Still Eye of the Dragon or Sandals of the Saint
* Cloaks are some of the most common targets for artifact juggling. Late-game heroes may find the need to juggle Angel Wings, Dragon Wing Tabard, and Cape of Velocity depending on circumstances.

Building the Roost increases stormbird and ayssid growth by +3 per week.

The specialty of Illor the Captain increases the speed of any stormbirds or ayssids by 1 and their attack and defense skills by 5% for every 4 levels (rounded up).

Discussion
Stormbirds are average-at-best fourth level creatures. Ayssids however gain tremendous advantages from the upgrade. They do among the best overall damage of all 4th level creatures, and the ability to strike twice (as long as at least 1 creature died from the initial attack) is invaluable. They are relatively fragile though, so protect them if you can with Shield, Stone Skin, or other such defensive spells.

Siege combat is a special type of combat in Heroes III where the defending player has some significant advantages including Arrow towers, a Moat, and Siege walls.

A Town must have at least a Fort structure built in order to use siege combat, and the defenses are substantially improved upon construction of the Citadel and Castle.

Tips, combat tactics, and features
* Attacking creatures will get stuck in a moat for at least 1 combat round. This can be bypassed with the Teleport spell or by breaking or "trapping" the drawbridge.
* Arrow towers can be incredibly effective in all stages of the game, due to their ability to bypass all ranged penalty and ignoring the defense stat of creatures.
* Catapults will damage the walls once per turn (can be augmented by the ballistics skill.) Walls can also be damaged by Earthquake as well as the cyclops creature type.
* Flying creatures can fly over walls, but they will usually become high priority targets for defending melee creatures as well as the arrow towers.
* The center arrow tower does the highest damage, and usually will not be destroyed until the main walls have been significantly damaged.
* Several towns have enhanced moats. Most notably, the Fortress has a high-damage moat that is 2 hexes wide. The Tower has land mines in place of a moat, which can occasionally detonate several times as creatures walk over them, but are generally considered weaker than standard moats, because they do not hinder movement.
Blind can be removed with Cure and Dispel spells, or it is removed if the creature is attacked in any way or the duration of the spell ends. If Blind is removed from a creature, it will have a chance to act on its turn as it normally would according to its initiative, or if its turn has already passed for the round, it will act immediately.
School of Fire Magic is one of the four schools of magic. Others are School of Air Magic, School of Earth Magic and School of Water Magic. School of Fire Magic is related to the secondary skill Fire Magic, which allows heroes' to cast Fire School spells more effectively and at reduced cost. The cost reduction is the same regardless of whether a hero holds the skill at basic, advanced, or expert level.

Discussion
The most powerfull spell in the School of Fire Magic is Berserk, which combined with expert Fire Magic can be cast on an area of three hex radius. It causes all affected creatures to use their attack to the nearest possible target. The only downside is, that with Pendant of Dispassion, a treasure class artifact, the enemy can protect all his troops from Berserk. Additionally, Armageddon is sometimes quite useful spell, that can be used in a tactic called Dragogeddon. Other useful spells are Curse and Blind. Curse becomes a mass spell at expert level of Fire Magic, and can significantly reduce enemy damage. Blind on the other hand is an all-around spell that is beneficial for almost any situation.

Generally, the School of Fire Magic has only few useful spells. Berserk can change the course of battle, and blind is certainly one of the game's best hindering spells. However, the lack of buff spells, and limited scope of adventure spells make Fire Magic a dispensable skill.

Discussion
Quite useful, since it gives you first chance to cast spells in sieges (provided that the defending hero doesn't have Artillery).

Recommended for: Heroes with walker-heavy armies

Further discussion: While useful for breaking open the gate quickly, one also has to care to consider that it is the only battle-skill that in non-siege battle situations has absolutely no impact. Therefore, in a multiplayer game it may be better to select a more multi-situation skill upon which to invest. In single-player games, more useful, but also situational, as the AI tends to charge out of the castle if an army demonstrates any significant long-range damage abilities. It is very rare that the AI stays in the castle entirely, and that this skill is entirely necessary. I would take this if I had walker armies, and were offered an alternative skill considerably less useful (ie. eagle eye, learning).
War machine is common term used for when referring either to The Ammo Cart, Ballista, First Aid Tent or Catapult. Basically they are all special combat units which are available in most of the battles. The only exceptions are creature banks and shipwrecks, where none of the war machines are used. Furthermore, Catapults are only used in siege combats. All war machines have a special slot reserved just for that particular war machine.

Typically war machines except the Catapult are bought from Blacksmiths, which sell different war machine depending on the town. Additionally, war machines can be bought from an Adventure Map location called the War Machine Factory, which sell all war machines (except Catapults). Stronghold has the special building Ballista Yard, where a visiting hero can buy a Ballista. All heroes have the Catapult with them, and if one is destroyed in the combat, a new one is automatically added to hero's catapult slot.

All war machines are immobile and unaffected by luck and morale with the exception of the Ballista, which can have a lucky strike. Additionally, war machines do not affect the hero's movement.

Ammo Cart
Ammo cart provides unlimited ammuntion for creatures with ranged attacks.

Sold by the blacksmith of Inferno, Stronghold, and Tower.

Ballista
A ballista is a missile weapon that, like ranged units, shoots projectiles toward enemy troops, but is unable to retaliate against attacks. It has a basic damage range (of 2–3) like creatures, but the damage calculation is different. The formula for the calculation of damage is (2–3)*(hero's attack + 1). The Artillery and Archery secondary skills increase this damage. The ballista acts at the end of every combat round, followed only by the first aid tent, and can be controlled when a hero has learned any level of Artillery. Contrary to what its in-game statistics indicate, a ballista has unlimited shots.

Ballistae can be bought from Blacksmiths in Castle, Dungeon and Conflux towns, and from Ballista Yards in Stronghold towns. They can also be purchased from war machine factories on the adventure map. Heroes who specialize in ballistae typically bring one with them when hired.

First Aid Tent
First aid tent heals up to 25 points of hit points of the top creature in target allied stack. The amount of health restored is affected by first aid secondary skill, which also gives the player control over the tent rather than being chosen by computer. First aid tents act last at the combat round. Tents can be bought from blacksmiths of rampart, fortress and necropolis towns, or from a war machine factory, an adventure map location. Typically heroes with first aid specialty start with a first aid tent.
Catapult
The Catapult only appears on the battlefield when siege attacking enemy towns with walls, which requires the town to have a fort, citadel, or castle. Its main use is to attack and destroy the walls in order to enable ground troops to attack the defenders. The Catapult can also attack and destroy the arrow towers of citadels and castles. The ballistics secondary skill enhances the performance of the Catapult. Basic ballistics gives the player control over the Catapult making it possible to aim at particular parts of the siege structures. During a siege, the Catapult shoots after the arrow towers, but before any other troop.

Discussion
The Ballista is a war machine of some limited use, however it requires a high (25+) Attack skill before it starts dealing enough damage to justify its 2500 Gold cost. The Artillery skill can offset this somewhat, but comes with the high opportunity cost of omitting a potentially more useful secondary skill such as Offense or Armorer. The above restrictions generally limit the Ballista to might heroes with high Attack skill. Of the four towns that sell Ballistae, Barbarians from Stronghold are most likely to reach this skill - more defensive heroes such as those from Fortress will not be able to make use of the Ballista as efficiently.

The First Aid tent is nearly useless, even with the (also nearly useless) First Aid skill at its top level. Its main limitation is that it cannot revive creatures that are already downed, so if used on anything less than a level 5 or so creature most of its healing goes to waste (e.g. healing Centaurs with 10 hp each - the Tent can restore a maximum of 9 hp per round, IF a single centaur is hanging on with a single hp left). The only case in which a First Aid Tent is useful is when a player somehow obtains a high-level creature early in the game, such as from a Refugee Camp. Setting a hero up with 1-2 high level creatures and a first-aid tent ensures that the healing is not wasted and allows the player to clear wandering monsters from the map more easily.

The Ammo Cart's unlimited ammunition is usually unnecessary, but is EXTREMELY useful in the few situations when it is needed. Most shooters in the game have enough ammunition to attack 12 times, with many carrying more. The few exceptions are Master Gremlins (8 shots), Medusa Queens (8 shots), and Medusas (only 4 shots!). With good Morale, these creatures run the risk of quickly depleting their ammunition over the course of a battle. This can be the difference between defeat and victory, particularly in a bloody castle siege. If the enemy Catapult can be destroyed and their flying units killed, even a single shooter with an ammunition cart can eventually drive of the enemy if the walls are still intact.

As every hero gets a Catapult free of cost which is only deployed for siege warfare, there is little choice involved in catapult usage other than targeting with the Ballistics skill.
