Restoration of Erathia is the original homm game, with no expansions installed.

Story
The game's story unfolds primarily through a series of seven playable campaigns, all set upon the continent of Antagarich. During the campaigns, the story is told from alternating points of view, giving players the opportunity to play as each of the town alignments.

Following her marriage to King Roland Ironfist of Enroth in Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven, Catherine becomes a Queen. In the meantime, her father, King Gryphonheart, is assassinated. Without their beloved King, the kingdom of Erathia falls to the dark forces of Nighon and Eeofol. Queen Catherine returns home seeking to rally the people of her homeland and lead them against the evil that has ravaged their nation.

Erathia's capital of Steadwick is sacked by the dungeon lords of Nighon and the demons of Eeofol. Catherine's first task is to establish a foothold in the conquered kingdom by enlisting the aid of allies. The wizards of Bracada and the elves of AvLee answer her call, and together they push towards Steadwick and eventually retake it. In the meantime, the necromancers of Deyja, having been responsible for the assassination of King Gryphonheart, plot to revive his corpse as a lich. They plan to use his wisdom in leading their own armies of the undead. However, King Gryphonheart's will proves too much for the necromancers even in his corrupted state, and he becomes a rogue lich. Having little other recourse, Queen Catherine is forced to ally herself with the necromancers and together they set out to destroy the lich of King Gryphonheart before he becomes too powerful.

There are also two campaigns that do not involve the main storyline. In one, the two neutral town alignments feud with each other over territorial disputes. Another campaign, accessible only after the main campaigns are complete, tells the story of separatists living along the border between Erathia and AvLee. Tired of the border skirmishes that bring unrest to their homelands, they join together to fight for independence from the two large kingdoms.

Campaigns
* Long Live the Queen
* Dungeons and Devils
* Spoils of War
* Liberation
* Long Live the King
* Song for the Father
* Seeds of Discontent

Many of these campaigns do not have to be played in linear sequence. This means that there are pairs of scenarios of which you can play either one first. It is not obvious during scenario selection that a choice exists. In most cases, the scenario order choice has no significant effect.

Important: The game tracks your progress through the campaigns via a save file, not a game flag. That means that you cannot play the scenarios in a random sequence. Start with the first scenario of one of the first three campaigns. When you finish that scenario, you create a save file. You should probably name that file by some appropriate name. Start the second scenario from that file. When you finish the second scenario, you save again. You should probably make a new file for this. When you complete the final scenario of the first campaign, save again. So far, so good. But when you start the second campaign, you MUST load your most recent save file first, otherwise your progress through the campaigns is lost. Continue through the campaigns with this method.
Their armies are primarily made up of deadly creatures – born of the swamps, and then subdued and trained for warfare. While among them there is only one ranged attack creature, Fortress units are possessed of many special abilities to offset this deficiency. Fortress represent Tatalia.
Strategy
Pros
*High defense (Defense themed town)
*With a two-hex moat and several buildings which increase the stats of the defending hero, a Fortress castle is a real pain to attack.
*Resilient hand-to-hand troops with excellent specials (Death Stare, Petrify, Poison)
*Their swamp native terrain makes them move much faster than any hero (without pathfinding) in the swamp.
*The Wyvern Nest is very cheap and has very low requirements compared to the other level 6 dwellings, allowing the Fortress town to get level 6 units in their army early even on impossible difficulty.

Cons
*The heavy focus on Defense can be disadvantageous in many cases, as a hero with high attack can kill their enemies before they have a chance to attack back. Attack can therefore be used as a type of defense, while defense cannot be used as offense.
**The heavy focus on Defense combined with the fact that fortress only have got one shooter makes it more difficult for fortress to win battles without casualities than the other factions.
*Highest level Mage Guild is 3.
*Some creatures have poor stats (in sod some stats for Lizardman/Lizard Warrior and Serpent Fly/Dragon Fly were increased, but overall they are still relatively weak. In wake of gods, this can be fixed by use of some settings making Fortress creatures better)
*With two relatively weak fliers (lvl 3 with 20 hp, lvl 6 with 70 (!) hp) and one very weak shooter, the Fortress has a very hard time invading other towns properly. So Expert Ballistics, Expert Teleport and/or Expert Earthquake are a must.
*This is the weakest faction. Poor magic, poor leaders, weak units.
Weakest is the Scroll of Death Ripple. This spell is only useful in a few situations, and you are likely to get it quickly anyway. The Dead Man's Boots increase the Necromancy skill of one stack by 15%, which is useful. The best bonus is 3 Ghost Dragons; they are incredibly powerful at the beginning of the scenario, and that has a strong effect on the rest of the scenario.

Tips
*There are two inaccessible regions in the south-central part of the map. There is a powerful Artifact in each region, and some other goodies. Depending on which Artifact you start the scenario with, you will only be able to access one of these regions, unless you learn Fly or Dimension Door.
*You start the scenario outnumbered 5-3, which would be bad against a human opponent, but the AI wastes a lot of resources, so winning is pretty easy. You should be able to win well before you manage to explore the entire map.
Heroes
You start with one (fixed) hero, as well as the Collar of Conjuring, and maybe the Spyglass.

The enemy starts with Mot.

Maximum Heroes: No maximum

Maximum Level: No maximum
Starting Options
The weakest starting bonus is the Scroll of Protection from Earth, because you will never use it. Next weakest is the Pendant of Death; it has little value in an undead vs. undead situation. However, it may allow you to pass a Border Guard in the next scenario, but this is too complicated to analyze, and you have no way of knowing about that yet anyway. But 25 Zombies make a real difference at the start of the scenario, and that is very important for the rest of the scenario.

Tips
*This scenario has a bug-like feature, and it propagates through the rest of the campaign. There is an inaccessible region on the right side of the map. If you didn't get the Spyglass last scenario, then the Artifacts there, the Ogre's Club of Havoc and the Pendant of Death, cannot be obtained, unless you learn Fly or Dimension Door. These Artifacts presumably give you access to other inaccessible areas in the following scenarios.
*You have to make an important choice early on. Do you invest heavily in your central city, and maybe lose it, or does that investment mean that you will be able to defend it better? In the event, it will not matter.
*You do not have enough resources to build up both of your cities fully, and you shouldn't do that in any case. Ultimately, don't invest anything at all in second-level production buildings. Let your enemy do that, and then capture his cities. Just concentrate on pumping out troops. You are resource-limited in this scenario.
*This scenario is easier than it looks. You start outnumbered 3-2, but the map is strongly compartmentalized, and the AI is not able to concentrate its forces effectively. In fact, you should be able to use your interior lines of communication to outnumber your enemies locally at all times. Napoleon did this. The only difficulty will be in not killing Mot before you have completed all the map-related missions.

This is the second map of the hommroe campaign Long Live the King.

Backstory
The war in Erathia is the greatest thing that could have happened for the nation of Deyja. A war of this scale is an endless harvest for our undead armies. Today we shall feast, and tomorrow we shall conquer Erathia for ourselves.
Cinematic Briefing
Before we begin our large scale invasion of Erathia, we must fill our ranks. Erathia's populous will provide the recruits we need. Invade the local region and resurrect the needed troops.
In-Game
To truly catch Erathia by surprise, we must attack within three months. However, our forces are not nearly strong enough for a full scale attack. We need you to harvest the creatures along the Erathian border, raising enough undead to allow us (to) launch our campaign. As before, you must move quickly. We must have the element of surprise when we attack Erathia, so we can not delay more than three months. In that time you must provide us with at least 2500 skeletons. If you fail, we will have no chance against Erathia. Do not fail.
Quest/Objective
To win, you must have a total of 2500 Skeletons in all your armies or garrisons within 3 months. Some Border Guards can only be passed if a Hero carries a Quest Artifact from a previous scenario, but the the artifact beyond the Border Guard will travel with you to the next scenario.

Maximum Heroes: No maximum

Maximum Level: No maximum

Starting Options
*Start with the Vampire's Cowl
*Start with a Necromancy Amplifier
*Start with Unearthed Graves

Tips
*If you want to make the scenario harder, start with the Vampire's Cowl, but don't use it, which means that your starting bonus is effectively zero. The next best starting bonus is Unearthed Graves, which gives you 6 Skeletons per week. The next best starting bonus is the Necromancy Amplifier, which gives x Skeletons per week, where x is 10% of the number of units you kill, across all your armies, and that is easily more than 6. The best starting bonus is the Vampire's Cowl, assuming you use it, even though it only affects one stack, because it cannot be obtained during the scenario, and it adds to the Necromancy Amplifier and Unearthed Graves, which you will get quite soon anyway.
*There is no organized opposition in this scenario. Things just stand around waiting to die. The only difficulty is in exploring the entire map before you get 2,500 Skeletons.
*Necromancy is a very powerful ability as this mission illustrates and it is highly recommended to make use of it by engaging all wandering creatures in combat and not allowing them to flee.
*The scenario information is incorrect. Apparently, if you end a scenario with certain Artifacts, and not necessarily Quest Artifacts, then they will be in your possession at the start of the next scenario, and you will be able to pass certain Border Guards in that scenario. The Artifacts beyond those Border Guards will then be in your possession at the start of the next scenario, and so forth. It doesn't seem to matter who is carrying the Artifacts, or where they are when you try to pass the Border Guards.
*This scenario has a bug-like feature, and it propagates through the rest of the campaign. There is an inaccessible region in the NW corner of the map. The Artifact there, the Spyglass, cannot be obtained, unless you learn Fly or Dimension Door. This Artifact presumably gives you access to other inaccessible areas in the following scenarios.

Cinematic Briefing
Our nation's goal was to kill the man who banished us from Erathia. However, Nighon and Eeofol's subsequent invasion has done us an unexpected favor. Erathia's strewn with the dead. For necromancers, this is the season of harvest. This is a season of war. Queen Catherine is a formidable foe. To defeat Erathia's remaining military, we need a tactician greater than her. We have a plan... An ironic plan. While Catherine organizes the last stage of her war with Nighon and Eeofol, you will sneak into Erathia and locate the King Gryphonheart's Grave. Be wary. The region is occupied by scattered Erathian. When the gravesite is found, we will resurrect the dead king and make him our pawn. With King Gryphonheart commanding our armies, his former home will become land of the dead ???

If you didn't get the Speculum last scenario, then the Artifacts there, the Ogre's Club of Havoc and the Pendant of Death, cannot be obtained, unless you learn Fly or Dimension Door.

Campaigns
* Long Live the Queen
* Dungeons and Devils
* Spoils of War
* Liberation
* Long Live the King
* Song for the Father
* Seeds of Discontent

Backstory
The war in Erathia is the greatest thing that could have happened for the nation of Deyja. A war of this scale is an endless harvest for our undead armies. Today we shall feast, and tomorrow we shall conquer Erathia for ourselves.
Cinematic Briefing
With King Gryphonheart commanding our armies, his former home will become land of the dead
In-Game
Our spies tell us that the tomb of King Gryphonheart is located in the town of Stonecastle, near Erathia's northern border, in a place that was clear of the war with Nighon and Eeofol. Seek this place out and capture it so that we may animate the body of the King.
You must also seek out the Spirit of Oppression and bring it to Stonecastle, as it is one of the items we need for the ritual to animate the King's body. But you must act quickly - the body will be of no use to us if its spirit departs.
Quest/Objective
To win, you must bring the Spirit of Oppression to the city of Stonecastle within three months. Seek out the Seer's Huts - completing the Seer's Quest will all you to carry the reward to the next scenario.

Victory message, "Congratulations! You have reached your destination, precious cargo intact, and can claim victory!"

Defeat message, "Alas, time has run out on your quest. All is lost."
*Start with a Scroll of Death Ripple
*Start with 1 Black Knight
*Start with a Skeleton Transformer

Tips
*The enemy starts with a more powerful hero than you start with featuring a throng of pikemen and a horde of crossbowmen. However his reinforcements are almost non-existent as the enemy does not purchase any structures.
*The enemy does not adventure past the first gate and rarely captures even the silos in their borders - so there is no reason to rush beyond that three month limit on the mission.
*After about 6 weeks, you will be powerful enough that you can easily crush Red.
*To acquire the Spirit of Oppression you must pass a series of artifacts through three Seer's Huts.
#The first artifact to require is the Pendant of Total Recall which is located underground in the bottom left - heavily guarded by monks and zealots.
#Move the Pendant of Total Recall to Spiridion the Seer located above ground in the bottom left of the map.
#Move the Hourglass of the Evil Hour you acquired from Spiridion to Kae the Seer located underground in the top right closest to your castle.
#Move the Pendant of Dispassion you acquired from Kae to Heather the Seer located above ground to the left of your castle.
#Move the Spirit of Oppression to Stonecastle to complete this mission.

Backstory
In times of strife, your mercenary ways will earn you great rewards. With Erathia collapsing under the weight of the Nighon onslaught in the east, the opportunity for some land grabbing has presented itself in the west. Erathia's lands are ours for the taking.
Cinematic Briefing
Representatives from both Tatalia and Krewlod seek your services... again. Both nations claim the last strip of Erathian land between their countries. Few Erathian castles remain in the area. They are nothing more than a token resistance. The most ferocious battles will occur between Tatalia and Krewlod. Ironically, this land has little value. This is a border war. Tatalia seeks to extend its reaches from the lowlands to the hills. Krewlod wants to halt Tatalia's march before it reaches their northern border. No matter which side you fight for, the other will perceive you as a traitor. Choose wisely. Choose the winning side. Your life depends on it.
In-Game
Stronghold Side
You receive your orders from one of Duke Boragus's generals. "I've never liked mercenaries myself, but you've managed to prove yourself worthy enough to get offered a second contract. I hear that ol' Tralossk was so mad you turned him down that he ordered your head delivered to him in a basket!"

"Anyway, in case you hadn't noticed, this is a border war. Ol' Tralossk has got it into his head that he'd like some of our territory. YOU are here to stop him. Duke Boragus likes you, but your life won't be worth spit if the Tatalians show up at the doors of the Duke's Palace."

"Now, your orders are clear. Stop the Tatalian advance, then beat those sorry Lizards so far back across the border that they'll never even THINK about dry land again. Oh, and while you're at it, get rid of those pesky Erathian outposts. Have fun!"
Fortress Side
You receive a message from King Tralossk - "I am pleased that you have chosen to side with us. Your knowledge of how those stupid barbarians fight will give you an advantage, though it is very likely that Duke Boragus has put a price on your head for being a traitor."

"This will be a fight to the finish. We wish to extend our borders into the Krewlod hills, and they wish to stop us. A token Erathian force will likely get caught in the middle, but there is simply nothing we can, or wish to, do about it."

"Do well, and you shall be idolized by all of Tatalia. Fail... well, we don't need to discuss that just yet." The letter is simply stamped with the scaly insignia of House Tralossk.
Quest/Objective
To win, you must capture all towns and castles and all enemy heroes. Regardless of which side you choose, the other will forever consider you a traitor.
Map Details
Difficulty: Normal. It is more challenging to play it as the lizards. Not only do you have poor troops and weak magic, but it makes a big difference whether you start with 8 12-th level heroes or just a couple. In addition, the orcs start with a better position, having access to the sea right away.
Erathian history has never recorded the fall of Steadwick to her enemies. Today we start a glorious campaign to forever change this fact. ====In-Game====
You are to be congratulated on your progress so far. You have laid waste to Eastern Erathia, and are now within striking distance of the Erathian capital of Steadwick. You must capture the capital quickly!

Not only have Bracada and AvLee sent reinforcements, but we have received news that Queen Catherine Ironfist is marching a sizeable army from the south. We must control the capital and its garrisons before she arrives.
Quest/Objective
To win, you must capture the city of Steadwick within 3 months.
