== Story ==
The southern parts of '''Avauntnell''' are quite rocky, and has been home to many [[barbarian]] tribes over the centuries, due to how close this area is to [[Krewlod]]. The [[Erathia]]ns tried to build settlements here, but the harsh environment and barbarian raids made this difficult. The grasslands and forests further north attracted more settlers, and the [[Erathia]]n militia had a presence here, including an order known as the [[Knights of the Blade]].

The Ferris Swamp, located in the northern parts of of Avauntnell, is controlled by a small group of [[necromancer]] cultists known as the [[Ebon Hand]]. The [[Erathia]]ns decided that since they didn't cause many problems, it wasn't worth the time and expense to send their armies to this remote swamp region and deal with them.

Another region in northern Avauntntell is home to the [[Hand of Death]], a necromancer cult that bribed the local [[Erathia]]n militia to leave them alone. The main [[Erathia]]n leadership were unaware that their militia had been bribed, so the [[necromancer]]s were left in peace.

Some time before the [[Restoration Wars]], [[Sandro]] hired [[Crag Hack]] to retrieve some magical artifacts from Avauntnell. The [[Enroth (continent)|Enrothian]] hero ended up in combat against the barbarians, the Knights of the Blade, the Ebon Hand, and the Hand of Death, but still managed to bring all the items back to his employer.

* The exact borders of Avauntnell are not specified, but the [[Hack and Slash]] campaign map establishes that it stretches throughout most of western Erathia. For the {{wh}}{{hota}} campaign map of [[Antagarich]], the name "Avauntnell" broadly denotes some of the region's central and northern parts. Much of Avauntntell also falls under this map's "[[Griffin Cliff (Region)|Griffin Cliff]] and [[Battlestead]]" and "[[Erathia Plains]]"  regions, the latter also bordering Avauntnell along the [[Teal River]] in this rendition.
