A Sanctuary is a very useful building. Heroes visiting it cannot be attacked. They can stay here as long as it's needed and you don't pay for visiting. However, there can only be one hero in every Sanctuary at the same time.

Sanctuary is an Adventure Map location, where a visiting hero cannot be attacked by enemy heroes. It is free to visit the Sanctuary, but it can be visited by only one hero at the time.

Discussion

The protection of the Sanctuary and the fact that a hero can remain there indefinitely, may make it advantageous to reach stratgically located Sanctuary first and keep a hero located there. Another tactic is to gather all the gold or resource generating artifacts on one hero, and move him to the safety of the Sanctuary.
