Overview[edit | hide | hide all]

The Mysterious Island is a custom scenario for Heroes of Might and Magic III: Horn of the Abyss, created by François (mapmaker name: "Papyjama"). Released in March 2025, the map achieved #1 ranking on maps4heroes.com with 73 ratings and over 30,000 downloads in its first 10 months.

Development History[edit | hide]

Origins (1995-1998)

The concept originated 30 years ago when François first read Jules Verne's novel The Mysterious Island as a child in 1995. Fascinated by the story and the map illustration in the book, he sketched his own version in 1998 while playing Heroes II, dreaming of creating a map based on this layout.

Early Attempts

Initial attempts were limited by the maximum "XL" map size in both Heroes II and Heroes III, making it impossible to realize the full vision.

Modern Development (2020-2026)

In 2020, after discovering the Horn of the Abyss fan expansion, Papyjama finally had access to the "Giant" map size needed. He began development, combining his experience in visual communication, IT project management, and passion for game design. The project took 5 years of iterative development with 14+ major versions and 40+ patches based on community feedback.

Connection to Jules Verne's Novel[edit | hide]

The map retains several key elements from the original novel:

  • Beginning: Players start as castaways on a mysterious island, similar to the novel's protagonists
  • Island Shape: The main landmass follows the outline from Verne's book
  • Key Locations: Place names reference the novel (Mount Franklin, Granite House, etc.)
  • Captain Nemo: The legendary character and his submarine Nautilus play central roles
  • Story Elements: Volcanic activity, hidden secrets, and the mysterious benefactor theme

However, the map introduces original characters, narrative arcs, and gameplay mechanics while keeping Verne's adventure spirit alive.

Innovative Mechanics[edit | hide]

Player-Triggered Events

The climactic event is triggered by player action (not timed), giving players full agency over when to face the final challenge. This respects different play speeds while creating a memorable "I caused this" moment.

Teleporter Hub System

Since Town Portal spell is restricted until very late game, players discover a vampire mansion hub that unlocks progressively as territories are conquered, allowing fast travel between the 6 starting zones.

Spell Acquisition System

Creative use of Eagle Eye + Scholar abilities: players "steal" spells from enemies using an Eagle Eye specialist, then transfer them to allies via a Scholar character.

Multi-Phase Narrative

Inspired by Game of Thrones structure, the map features continuous plot twists and power shifts to maintain engagement throughout 100-200+ day campaigns.
