Animate Dead is a beautiful spell...if your army is comprised of undead. Since the Necropolis has only one ranged fighter, the lich and its upgrade, one must rely on this spell in order to raise them should they fall. Wraiths and their Mana-sapping ability can be particularly useful if facing a warlock or elementalist and are great for reviving. Ghost Dragons can be reanimated and it is always useful to have a possible age ability standing by.
The animated undead will only live for the duration of the battle, unless your hero has Advanced or Expert Earth Magic.
