Skeletons are often the main power of Necropolis, despite their low level, and are unavoidably present in every native hero's army even if not, which makes Galthran's skeleton specialty incredibly useful.  The speed boost alone is worth at least 70 [[movement]] points, assuming Zombies are not present in the army.  Together with his good starting skill, this makes him one of the best Death Knights.
 
The reason for the default replacement of Galthran with [[Ranloo]] was probably balance - the huge bonuses which Galthran provides for Skeletons made his Skeletons immensely powerful in mid- and late-game.

Skeletons are often the main power of Necropolis, despite their low level, and are unavoidably present in every native hero's army even if not, which makes Galthran's skeleton specialty incredibly useful.
